The Beginning Date for IRS to accept e-file and free file returns is Jan. 14. But some taxpayers will need to wait to file until mid- to late February due to the new tax law changes. Those who need to wait to file include:
- Taxpayer claiming Itemized Deductions on Schedule A, that includes mortgage interest, charitable deductions, medical and dental expenses as well as state and local taxes.
- Taxpayer claiming the Higher Education Tuition and Fees Deduction. But there will be no delays for those parents and students who claim other education credits.
- Taxpayer claiming the Educator Expense Deduction which is for kindergarten through grade 12 educators.
Tax deadlines for tax year 2010 is delayed to Apr. 18 2011 because the District of Columbia will observe Emancipation Day on Friday, April 15. Taxpayers get 3 extra days to file their federal tax returns this year. Meanwhile, the IRS has approved October 17, 2011 as the tax filing deadline for tax returns with extensions because Oct. 15 falls on a Saturday in 2011.
